Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students hear, separate, and blend sounds in spoken words. They use letter sounds and common spelling patterns to read words, then read connected text accurately and smoothly.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students connect letters and common letter patterns to sounds, then blend those sounds to read words. They recognize common high-frequency words and read a short grade-level passage accurately with natural phrasing.
Common Misconceptions: Students may guess a word from the picture or first letter instead of reading every sound. They may confuse letter names with sounds, treat digraphs as two sounds, or read quickly without accuracy.
How to Assess It: Give each student five regular one-syllable words and one short sentence to read aloud. Ask the student to segment one word into sounds and blend it again.

Lesson moves

Give students letter tiles to build map, change one tile to make mop, then change another tile to make top.
Ask students to explain how they decoded ship, including what sound sh represents and how they blended the sounds.
Play word sort bingo using cards with short vowels, digraphs, and common high-frequency words.
Have students read classroom labels and a simple daily schedule, then point out words they decoded and words they recognized quickly.
