What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen to spoken words, pull apart each sound, and put the sounds back together to name the word. They work with blends, sounds spelled with several letters, five-sound words, and words with more than one syllable.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can hear stamp and say /s/ /t/ /ă/ /m/ /p/ in order. The student can also blend five or more sounds and work across syllables in words such as sunset.

Common Misconceptions

Students may count letters instead of sounds, split /sh/ or /ch/ into two sounds, or treat a blend as one sound. They may also drop middle sounds in longer words or give syllables instead of individual sounds.

How to Assess It

Ask each student to separate the sounds in ship, stamp, and sunset. Then say /s/ /k/ /r/ /ŭ/ /b/ and /s/ /ŭ/ /n/ /s/ /ĕ/ /t/ for the student to blend.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students push one counter into a sound box for each sound they hear in ship, stamp, and sunset.

  2. Ask partners, “How are the sounds in ship and slip alike and different?” and require answers without naming letters.

  3. Play Robot Talk by saying /s/ /k/ /r/ /ŭ/ /b/, then awarding a point to students who blend it as scrub.

  4. Say the separate sounds in classroom object names, such as plant or basket, and have students point to the matching object.
