What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students break unfamiliar words into readable parts and connect letters or letter groups to sounds. They combine syllable patterns, vowel patterns, and meaningful word parts to pronounce words accurately.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately read unfamiliar one-syllable and multisyllabic words without relying on guessing. They explain how syllable patterns, vowel sounds, prefixes, suffixes, or roots helped them.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from the first letter or context instead of reading every syllable. They may divide words incorrectly, overlook vowel teams, or pronounce familiar affixes as separate words.
How to Assess It
- Give students five unfamiliar multisyllabic words, such as reluctant, transportation, and invisible. Ask them to mark syllable breaks, read each word aloud, and name the strategy used.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards to cut at syllable boundaries, label each vowel pattern, rebuild the words, and read them aloud.
Ask students to explain in writing how they decoded one unfamiliar word, naming the syllables, vowel patterns, and familiar word parts.
Play a decoding relay where teams mark syllables, underline vowel patterns, and correctly read a word before receiving the next card.
Use a science article and have students annotate five technical words, divide them into syllables, and practice reading them in context.
