What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students spell unfamiliar words by breaking them into sounds, syllables, roots, prefixes, and suffixes. They choose a useful strategy, check the result, and revise errors.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately spell single-syllable and multisyllabic words by using sound patterns, syllables, roots, and affixes. They can explain their chosen strategy and revise an incorrect spelling.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may spell only by sound, which causes errors with silent letters, vowel teams, and schwa sounds. They may drop syllables or miss spelling changes when adding prefixes and suffixes.
How to Assess It
- Dictate brisk, floating, reluctant, and disagreement. Students spell each word, divide the multisyllabic words, and name the strategy used for two words.

Ways to Teach It
Give students letter tiles and affix cards to build, divide, and spell words such as hopeful, careless, and disagreement.
Display two spellings, such as independent and independant, then ask students to defend the correct choice using patterns or word parts.
Play a syllable relay where teams hear a word, write each syllable on separate cards, then assemble the complete spelling.
Have students proofread a short school announcement and correct misspelled single-syllable and multisyllabic words using a dictionary.
