What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students listen to spoken words and break them into syllables, larger word parts, and individual sounds. They put sounds together, make rhymes and alliterations, and change first or last sounds to form new words.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can hear and work with sound parts without seeing the word in print. The student can blend, separate, identify, add, and remove sounds accurately in familiar one-syllable words.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name letters instead of saying sounds. They often hear beginning sounds more easily than middle or ending sounds, and may confuse a syllable with one sound. Some choose words that look alike instead of words that rhyme.

How to Assess It

Use a six-item oral exit check: clap the syllables in sunset, rhyme with cat, blend /s/ and /un/, give the middle sound in map, change map's first sound to /t/, and segment fish.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students counters and picture cards, then have them push one counter for each sound they hear in each pictured word.

  2. Ask students to compare cat, sun, and hat, explain which words rhyme, then suggest another word for the rhyming pair.

  3. Play Sound Switch: say map, ask students to replace /m/ with /t/, and continue with new first or last sounds.

  4. During attendance, students say their name's first sound and find a classmate or classroom object beginning with the same sound.
