Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students use letter patterns, syllables, and word parts to read unfamiliar words. They read grade-level text accurately, smoothly, and with expression while checking that it makes sense.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students read an unfamiliar grade-level passage accurately, at a steady pace, and with phrasing that reflects punctuation. They use syllables, spelling patterns, and meaningful word parts to decode unfamiliar words.
Common Misconceptions: Students may guess a word from its first letter or the picture instead of reading every part. They may ignore prefixes, suffixes, vowel patterns, or punctuation when reading aloud.
How to Assess It: Give students a short grade-level passage and underline three unfamiliar words. Ask them to read aloud, explain how they decoded each word, and summarize the passage.

Lesson moves

Give pairs word cards to cut into syllables and affixes, rebuild, read aloud, and sort by spelling pattern.
Ask students to write how they would decode the word disagreement, then compare steps with a partner.
Play a word ladder game where students change one spelling pattern or affix, read the new word, and explain its meaning.
Use a school lunch menu and announcements to practice decoding longer words, reading with expression, and explaining unfamiliar terms.
