What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students figure out the meanings of unfamiliar words and phrases. They use context, word parts, word relationships, background knowledge, and reference tools, then apply new words in speaking and writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain an unfamiliar word’s meaning and point to evidence that supports their thinking. They check that the meaning fits the sentence, then use the word correctly in a new sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may grab the first familiar meaning of a multiple-meaning word, even when it does not fit the sentence. They may treat nearby words as proof without checking the whole sentence. Some students confuse a word’s root with its complete meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short paragraph with one bold unfamiliar word. Ask them to define it and identify two clues that support their answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs root, prefix, and suffix cards to build words, then have them explain how each part shapes the meaning.
Read a short paragraph and ask, "What does the bold word mean, and which nearby words helped you decide?"
Play Context Clue Match: students pair unfamiliar-word cards with definition cards and underline the clue that proves each match.
Have students collect three unfamiliar words from menus, signs, or packages, then use context or a dictionary to define them.
