What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students work out the meaning of unfamiliar words and words with more than one meaning. They use sentence clues, word parts, pictures, and reference tools. They explain which clue supports their answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students give a meaning that makes sense in the sentence. They point to useful context, explain a word part, or confirm the meaning with a glossary or dictionary.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the first definition they know, even when it does not fit the sentence. They may rely only on pictures or guess from one nearby word. Some ignore how prefixes and suffixes change meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give students the sentence, “Mia dashed to the bus because she was late.” Ask them to define “dashed” and underline the clue that helped.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with underlined words, word-part tiles, and dictionaries, then have them find and justify each meaning.
Ask, “Which words around the mystery word help most?” Students write the meaning and cite one clue.
Play Context Clue Four Corners, with students moving to the definition that fits each sentence and explaining their choice.
Use a school lunch menu to identify unfamiliar words, predict their meanings, and check them using pictures or a dictionary.
