What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students learn words used across school subjects and use them to share ideas. They choose words that fit the meaning when speaking and writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use words such as compare, explain, notice, and similar in complete sentences. Their word choices fit the topic and make their ideas clear.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use a new word because it sounds advanced, even when it does not fit the sentence. They may also know a word when reading but avoid it when speaking or writing.
How to Assess It
- Give students the words compare, describe, and explain. Ask them to write two sentences about a familiar story using two words correctly.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs sort word cards into everyday words and school words, then build an accurate sentence with each school word.
Ask students to explain how two story characters are similar and different, using compare, contrast, and evidence.
Play Vocabulary Charades, where students act out words such as describe, predict, classify, and summarize while classmates name and use them.
Students write museum labels for classroom objects using precise words such as observe, measure, identify, and function.
