What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use subject-area words accurately when they talk and write. They choose words that fit the topic, sentence, and purpose rather than inserting them at random.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose precise academic words when explaining ideas, answering questions, and writing responses. They use each word in the correct context and can clarify its meaning when asked.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use a sophisticated word that sounds right but does not fit the sentence. They may also confuse related words, such as compare and contrast, or avoid academic words when speaking.
How to Assess It
- Give students the words evidence, compare, and conclude. Ask them to write two connected sentences using two words, then explain one sentence aloud using the third.

Ways to Teach It
Sort cards labeled analyze, evidence, contrast, and summarize by meaning, then use each word to describe a completed classroom task.
Discuss this prompt: How does evidence help a reader infer a character’s feelings? Require both academic words in each response.
Play Vocabulary Fix-It by giving teams incorrect sentences to revise, such as, “I inferred the two pictures to find their differences.”
Read a weather report, find words such as predict and data, then record a 30-second forecast using both words accurately.
