What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students learn the meanings of common school words used across subjects. They choose and use these words correctly when speaking and writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly use words such as explain, describe, compare, and identify during class talk. They also use these words accurately in short written responses.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may repeat a word from the teacher without knowing what it means. They may confuse words such as compare and describe, or use them in the wrong situation.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Show two animal pictures and ask, “Compare these animals in one complete sentence.” Check for correct use of compare and accurate details.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs of objects to students and have them describe, compare, and sort the objects using sentence frames.
Ask students to answer, “How are a pencil and a crayon alike and different?” using compare and describe.
Play Vocabulary Match by pairing cards showing academic words, simple meanings, and example classroom directions.
Have students explain the steps for completing a familiar classroom job, using sequence words and clear action words.
