What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students learn the meanings of common school words used across subjects. They choose and use these words correctly when speaking and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly use words such as explain, describe, compare, and identify during class talk. They also use these words accurately in short written responses.

Common Misconceptions

Students may repeat a word from the teacher without knowing what it means. They may confuse words such as compare and describe, or use them in the wrong situation.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Show two animal pictures and ask, “Compare these animals in one complete sentence.” Check for correct use of compare and accurate details.
