What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use classroom and subject words when they speak and write. They choose words that match their intended meaning and use them correctly in sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students use taught academic words correctly during class discussions and in written responses. They choose words that fit the topic, sentence, and purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may replace simple words with academic words that do not fit the meaning. They may know a definition but use the wrong word form, such as compare instead of comparison.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with the words evidence and conclude. Students write two sentences about a short paragraph, using each word correctly.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards and example cards to match, then have students create and read a new sentence for each word.
Ask students to explain how two characters are similar, using the words compare, evidence, and conclusion in their response.
Play vocabulary bingo by reading sentence clues while students cover the academic word that correctly completes each clue.
Have students write morning announcements using academic words such as summarize, identify, describe, and explain, then read them to the class.
