What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students work out the meaning of unfamiliar words while reading. They use nearby words, word connections, dictionaries or glossaries, and what they already know.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students explain an unfamiliar word using clues from the sentence, known word parts, related words, or a reference source. They choose a meaning that makes sense in context and name the evidence they used.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a meaning based on one nearby word instead of the whole sentence. They may also think a dictionary's first definition always fits or confuse synonyms with antonyms.
How to Assess It
- Give students the sentence, “The exhausted puppy flopped onto its bed after the long walk.” Ask them to define “exhausted” and underline two clues.

Ways to Teach It
Place clue cards around an unknown word card, then have pairs arrange the clues and explain the word's likely meaning.
Read a short paragraph with one bold word, then ask students to write which clue helped most and why.
Play Context Clue Detective by giving teams sentences, unknown words, and three possible meanings to match and justify.
Use a cafeteria menu or classroom notice to find an unfamiliar word, then confirm its meaning with context and a child-friendly dictionary.
