What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students figure out unfamiliar words, multiple-meaning words, and phrases by using clues in the text. They also use figurative meaning, word relationships, reference tools, and what they already know. They explain which clue or source supports their answer.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select a meaning that makes sense in the sentence and passage. They point to context clues, word relationships, background knowledge, or a reference source to support their choice. They can distinguish between literal, figurative, and multiple meanings.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first dictionary definition without checking whether it fits the sentence. They may treat figurative phrases literally or mistake a nearby word for a useful context clue. Some rely on guessing instead of explaining their evidence.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: “Leo was reluctant to enter the dark cave. He hung back while the others stepped inside.” Ask students to define “reluctant” and underline the clue that supports their answer.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips with bold words and definition cards, then have them match each word to the meaning that fits its context.

  2. Ask students to explain how the meaning of “cold” changes in “cold water” and “a cold stare.”

  3. Play Meaning Match: teams choose the correct definition for a word in context and earn a point by naming the clue.

  4. Examine an unfamiliar word from a weather report, menu, or product label, then use context and a dictionary to confirm its meaning.
