What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students determine what unfamiliar words, phrases, and multiple-meaning words mean in context. They use nearby clues, word relationships, figurative language, reference tools, and relevant background knowledge.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students infer a word’s meaning from a grade-level passage and point to the clues they used. They distinguish between multiple meanings and confirm uncertain choices with a dictionary or glossary.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first dictionary definition without checking whether it fits the sentence. They may read figurative phrases literally or let background knowledge override clues in the text.

How to Assess It

Give students two sentences using the word pitch differently. Ask them to define pitch in each sentence and underline the clues supporting each meaning.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place sentence strips and definition cards around the room, then have pairs match each word meaning to its supporting context.

  2. Ask students to explain in writing how the surrounding sentences change the meaning of a multiple-meaning word.

  3. Play Context Clue Relay, where teams identify a word’s meaning, name the clue type, and justify their answer.

  4. Have students examine a menu, advertisement, or instruction sheet and explain unfamiliar words using context and reference tools.
