What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students figure out unfamiliar words by checking pictures, nearby words, word connections, simple reference tools, and what they already know. They explain the clue and use the word correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a meaning that fits both the sentence and the picture. They name the clue they used, explain their thinking, and use the new word correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from the picture without checking the sentence. They may choose a familiar-looking word, copy a dictionary definition, or confuse opposites and related words.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture and sentence: “The puppy was exhausted, so it lay down and slept.” Ask, “What does exhausted mean, and what clue helped you?”

Ways to Teach It
Place mystery objects in bags, let students feel one, then use spoken clues and a picture chart to identify and describe it.
Read a page with one covered word and ask, “What word could fit here, and which picture or sentence clue supports your answer?”
Play Clue Detective by giving pairs sentence cards with bold words and matching meaning cards to find and explain.
Examine a classroom lunch menu, circle unfamiliar words, and use pictures, nearby words, or a picture dictionary to explain each item.
