What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students split unfamiliar words into roots, base words, prefixes, and suffixes. They use the meanings of those parts, along with context, to work out what the whole word means.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students break an unfamiliar word into meaningful parts and explain what each part contributes. They combine those meanings with sentence clues to give a clear, sensible definition.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat every word part as a complete word or guess from the first few letters. They may also confuse prefixes with suffixes or assume an affix has the same meaning in every word.
How to Assess It
- Give students the word “preview” in the sentence, “We watched a preview before the movie.” Ask them to circle the prefix and explain how it helps define the word.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs root, prefix, and suffix cards to combine into words, then have them write a meaning for each word.
Ask, “How do the parts of ‘transportation’ help you understand it?” and have students support answers with word-part meanings.
Play Word Part Match, where students pair affixes and roots with meanings, then earn a point by defining a completed word.
Have students collect words with familiar roots and affixes from food labels, signs, menus, or sports pages and explain each word’s parts.
