The standard
Evaluate reports based on data.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
What this standard means
Students need to read a report, notice what data was collected, and judge whether the conclusion is reasonable. They should check the sample, question wording, graphs, statistics, and whether the claim matches the evidence.
Mastery looks like students saying, “This claim is supported,” “This is overgeneralized,” or “We need more information,” with clear reasons. They often get stuck trusting official-looking graphs, missing biased samples, confusing correlation with cause, or ignoring small sample size.
Ways to teach it
- Hands-on: Give groups three printed data reports and sticky notes to label sample, claim, evidence, and one possible flaw.
- Writing prompt: Ask students, “Would you trust this headline based on the data shown? Explain using two details from the report.”
- Quick assessment: Show one graph and one claim, then have students write whether the claim is supported, unsupported, or unclear.
- Real-world connection: Bring in a sports, health, or school survey article and have students identify what the data can and cannot prove.
