Represent and interpret data.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
What this standard means
Students need to make and read data displays, especially line plots with fractional measurements. They should collect measurements, organize them clearly, and answer questions using the data. They also need to use fraction operations when data points are halves, fourths, or eighths.
Mastery looks like choosing a clear scale, placing every data point correctly, and explaining what the display shows. Students often get stuck when the scale skips fractions, when repeated values need stacked Xs, or when a question asks for a total, difference, or average using fractions.
Ways to teach it
- Have students measure 10 pencils to the nearest fourth inch, then build a line plot with Xs on chart paper.
- Ask students to write two questions a classmate could answer from a line plot, including one that uses fraction addition or subtraction.
- Show a small line plot and ask students to find the most common value, total length, and range on an exit ticket.
- Use a line plot of daily rainfall amounts and ask students how the data could help plan a school garden watering schedule.
