Math1st GradeMeasurement and Data

The standard

Represent and interpret data.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

What this standard means

Students need to collect simple data, sort it into categories, and show it with pictures, tally marks, or simple charts. They also need to answer questions about the data, such as how many, which has more, which has fewer, and how many more.

Mastery looks like a student making or reading a class graph and explaining what it shows in words. Students often get stuck counting symbols twice, comparing only by sight, or confusing “how many more” with “how many total.”

Ways to teach it

  • Hands-on: Give students a cup of pattern blocks, have them sort by shape, count each group, and build a picture graph.
  • Prompt: Ask, “Which lunch choice had the most votes, and how do you know from the chart?”
  • Quick assessment: Show a three-category pet graph and ask students to answer two counting questions and one “how many more” question.
  • Real-world connection: Graph the class weather each morning for a week, then discuss which weather happened most and least.
