The standard
Describe events as subsets of a sample space (the set of outcomes) using characteristics (or categories) of the outcomes, or as unions, intersections, or complements of other events ("or," "and," "not").
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
What this standard means
Students need to describe outcomes in a sample space and group them into events. They should use words, lists, tables, Venn diagrams, or symbols to show events such as “red card,” “even number,” or “student takes art.” They also need to combine events using or, and, and not.
Mastery looks like moving between a situation, a set of outcomes, and notation without losing meaning. Students often mix up “or” with exclusive or, forget that “not” means everything outside the event, or list outcomes without defining the full sample space first.
Ways to teach it
- Hands-on activity: Have students roll two dice, list the sample space, then circle outcomes for sum is 7, doubles, and not doubles.
- Writing prompt: Explain the difference between “A or B” and “A and B” using a deck of cards as your example.
- Quick assessment: Give a spinner with colors and numbers, then ask students to write three events as sets of outcomes.
- Real-world connection: Use a school club survey table and ask students to describe “plays sports,” “takes music,” and “sports or music.”
