The standard

Perform operations on vectors.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

What this standard means

Students need to add, subtract, and scale vectors, both with diagrams and with component form. They should connect the picture to the numbers, such as seeing 3v as a vector in the same direction with triple the length, or u minus v as adding the opposite of v.

Mastery looks like moving flexibly among arrows, ordered pairs, and real contexts like force or velocity. Students often get stuck by treating vectors like points, mixing up direction and magnitude, or subtracting components in the wrong order. Diagrams help catch many errors.

Ways to teach it

  • Use graph paper and colored arrows for students to build u plus v, u minus v, and 2u using tip-to-tail placement.
  • Prompt students: Explain why subtracting a vector is the same as adding its opposite, using both a diagram and components.
  • Give a 5-minute exit ticket with two component operations and one sketch showing vector addition.
  • Use a wind-and-airplane velocity problem where students add the plane’s velocity vector and the wind vector to find ground velocity.
