What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine vectors by adding or subtracting their components and by using head-to-tail diagrams. They scale vectors by positive, negative, and fractional values.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly add and subtract vectors using components or diagrams. They multiply a vector by a scalar and explain how the scalar affects its length and direction.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add vector magnitudes instead of adding corresponding components. They often reverse signs when subtracting or think scalar multiplication changes direction without changing length.
How to Assess It
- Give students u = ⟨3, -2⟩ and v = ⟨-1, 4⟩. Ask them to find u + v and -2u, then sketch both results.
