CCSS.Math.Content.6.EE.A

Math6th GradeExpressions and Equations

The standard

Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

What this standard means

Students move from doing arithmetic with numbers to writing and working with expressions that include variables. They need to use order of operations, write expressions from words, understand exponents, identify parts of an expression, and use properties to create equivalent expressions.

Mastery looks like a student explaining why 3(x + 4) and 3x + 12 match, not just copying a rule. Students often get stuck treating variables like labels, ignoring parentheses, or thinking expressions need an equal sign. Watch for weak multiplication facts and order of operations errors.

Ways to teach it

  • Use algebra tiles or drawn area models to build 2(x + 3), then record the matching expanded expression.
  • Ask students to write two different expressions for “six more than twice a number” and explain if they match.
  • Give four expression pairs and have students mark equivalent or not, then justify one choice with substitution.
  • Have students write an expression for total cost of movie tickets plus snacks, using a variable for the number of tickets.
