CCSS.Math.Content.6.EE.A.2a
The standard
Write expressions that record operations with numbers and with letters standing for numbers.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
What this standard means
Students need to turn words, situations, and calculations into math expressions. They use letters as unknown or changing numbers, not as labels. They must choose the right operation and put numbers and variables in the right order.
Mastery looks like writing expressions such as 8 + n, 3x, and 12 - p from short phrases or story situations. Students often mix up order in subtraction and division. They may write equations when only an expression is needed. They also confuse “5 less than x” with “5 - x.”
Ways to teach it
- Hands-on activity: Give pairs number cards, operation cards, and variable cards to build expressions from phrase cards like “twice a number plus 7.”
- Writing prompt: Ask students to explain the difference between “a number minus 9” and “9 minus a number” using examples.
- Quick assessment: Show five phrases on the board and have students write matching expressions on sticky notes before leaving.
- Real-world connection: Have students write an expression for the cost of buying n notebooks at $3 each plus a $2 folder.
