CCSS.Math.Content.6.EE.A.2
The standard
Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics · Expressions and Equations
What this standard means
Students need to write expressions from words, read algebraic expressions out loud, and evaluate them when given values for the variables. They should understand that a letter can stand for a number, and that the same expression can show a general rule.
Mastery looks like matching phrases to expressions, using correct order of operations, and substituting values accurately. Students often get stuck translating words like “less than,” treating 3x as 3 + x, or forgetting that parentheses affect the order.
Ways to teach it
- Hands-on activity: Give students number cards and variable cards to build expressions like 4x + 7, then evaluate them for x = 3.
- Discussion prompt: Ask, “How are 5 + n and n + 5 alike, and how is 5 - n different from n - 5?”
- Quick assessment: Show three word phrases and have students write an expression, read it aloud, and evaluate it for a given value.
- Real-world connection: Use a movie ticket price plus a snack cost to write and evaluate an expression for different group sizes.
