The standard
Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving a real-world or mathematical problem; understand that a variable can represent an unknown number, or, depending on the purpose at hand, any number in a specified set.

What this standard means
Students need to use letters as stand-ins for numbers in expressions and simple problem situations. They should know a variable can mean one missing value, like x + 7 = 15, or any value from a set, like n for the number of tickets bought.
Mastery looks like choosing a variable, defining what it means, and writing an expression that matches the situation. Students often get stuck when they treat the letter as a label, like using b for “bananas” instead of the number of bananas, or when they skip defining the variable.
Ways to teach it
- Give pairs price cards and shopping lists, then have them define variables and write expressions for total cost.
- Ask students to explain the difference between b meaning “bananas” and b meaning “the number of bananas.”
- Show three word problems and have students underline the unknown, define a variable, and write one matching expression.
- Use a cafeteria menu and ask students to write expressions for lunch orders with different numbers of items.
