What Students Need to Do
- Students place ordered pairs on a coordinate grid using the horizontal value first and the vertical value second. They explain what each value means in a word problem and use plotted points to answer questions.

- Students label both axes, use the given scale, and place points accurately in the first quadrant. They explain what each coordinate represents and use the graph to answer a question about the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often reverse the x- and y-values or move vertically before moving horizontally. They may ignore axis labels, use uneven intervals, or describe a point without connecting both values to the situation.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: “A school store uses x for notebooks sold and y for dollars earned. Plot (4, 12), then explain both coordinates.”

Tape a large grid on the floor; students stand at called ordered pairs and name the x-value, y-value, and movement used.
