Math5th GradeGraph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

The standard

Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation.

What this standard means

Students need to plot and read ordered pairs in the first quadrant. They should know that the first number tells how far to move right, and the second tells how far to move up. They also need to connect points on a grid to a real situation, not just place dots.

Mastery looks like accurate plotting, clear use of x and y values, and correct explanations of what each coordinate means. Common trouble spots are reversing the numbers, starting from the wrong place, skipping scale marks, and giving answers with no context, like saying “3, 5” instead of “3 hours, 5 miles.”

Ways to teach it

  • Have students use floor grid tape and coordinate cards to stand on points, then explain each ordered pair aloud.
  • Ask students to write what the point (4, 7) could mean on a graph about books read and days passed.
  • Give a four-question exit ticket with two points to plot and two plotted points to name and explain.
  • Show a simple map of a park on a coordinate grid and have students locate the pond, playground, and picnic table.
