The standard

Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

What this standard means

Students need to use the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, understand that the first number moves right and the second number moves up, and plot or name points using ordered pairs. They also need to use points on a graph to answer a problem, not just place dots.

Mastery looks like students labeling axes, choosing a scale when needed, plotting accurately, and explaining what a point means in the situation. Common trouble spots are reversing x and y, skipping numbers on the scale, starting at 1 instead of 0, and plotting points without connecting them back to the question.

Ways to teach it

  • Hands-on activity: Give pairs a floor grid, sticky notes, and ordered pairs, then have them stand on and label each point.
  • Discussion prompt: Show the point (4, 7) on a graph and ask, what does each number tell us to do?
  • Quick assessment: Ask students to plot (2, 5), (5, 2), and (0, 4), then write one sentence comparing them.
  • Real-world connection: Have students map classroom items on a simple coordinate grid, such as the sink, door, teacher desk, and pencil sharpener.
