What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use the origin and two labeled axes to locate ordered pairs in the first quadrant. They connect each coordinate to a quantity in a problem and interpret the plotted location.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly plot and name ordered pairs in the first quadrant. They explain that x shows horizontal distance and y shows vertical distance, including units from the problem.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often reverse x and y, move vertically first, or count the origin as one unit. They may also omit axis labels or ignore what each coordinate means in context.
How to Assess It
- Give students a grid and ask: “A map measures blocks east on x and blocks north on y. Plot and explain library point (2, 5).”

Ways to Teach It
Make a floor grid with tape, then call ordered pairs for students to reach by moving horizontally first and vertically second.
Ask students to explain in writing why points (2, 5) and (5, 2) are in different locations.
Play coordinate bingo using ordered pairs, with students marking points on blank first-quadrant grids.
Create a classroom map where each grid point represents one meter, then plot desks, doors, shelves, and other landmarks.
