CCSS.Math.Content.5.G.A.1

Math5th GradeGraph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

The standard

Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).

What this standard means

Students need to read and plot points in the first quadrant using ordered pairs. They should know the origin, x-axis, y-axis, and that the first number tells movement across while the second tells movement up.

Mastery looks like plotting points accurately, naming coordinates from a graph, and explaining the order of the numbers. Students often reverse x and y, start counting from 1 instead of 0, or count grid spaces instead of landing on grid lines.

Ways to teach it

  • Tape a large coordinate grid on the floor and have students walk ordered pairs from the origin, saying each move aloud.
  • Ask students to explain why the point (3,5) is not in the same place as (5,3).
  • Show five plotted points and have students write each ordered pair on a sticky note in two minutes.
  • Use a simple map of a park grid and ask students to give coordinates for the pond, bench, and playground.
