CCSS.Math.Content.6.NS.C.6c

Math6th GradeApply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers.

The standard

Find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram; find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

What this standard means

Students need to place positive numbers, negative numbers, fractions, and decimals on number lines and coordinate grids. They need to understand direction, distance from zero, and how an ordered pair tells them to move horizontally, then vertically.

Mastery looks like accurate placement on horizontal and vertical number lines, and correct plotting of points in all four quadrants. Students often mix up x and y, treat negative numbers as smaller distance instead of opposite direction, or struggle to place fractions between whole numbers.

Ways to teach it

  • Have students use tape on the floor as axes, then stand at points like -3, 2 and one-half, or (4, -2).
  • Ask students to explain how to plot (-2.5, 3) without drawing it first, using left, right, up, and down.
  • Give four points and one number line placement as an exit ticket, including a fraction and a negative decimal.
  • Show a simple city map grid and have students write coordinates for locations west, east, north, and south of a town center.
