- Students add and subtract positive and negative integers, fractions, and decimals. They use horizontal or vertical number lines to show each calculation and explain why subtracting a number means adding its opposite.

- Students accurately add and subtract signed integers, fractions, and decimals. They draw number-line models that match their equations and explain how direction and distance represent each operation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may apply multiplication sign rules to addition, such as claiming two negatives make a positive. They may always move left when subtracting, even when the number being subtracted is negative. Some also add or subtract fraction denominators instead of finding a common denominator.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Use a number line to solve -3/4 - (-1 1/2), then write an equivalent addition expression and explain each move.
