The standard
Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

What this standard means
Students need to plot ordered pairs, connect them in order, and name the polygon they made. They also need to find horizontal and vertical side lengths by counting grid units or subtracting matching coordinates, then use those lengths to solve area or perimeter problems.
Mastery looks like accurate plotting, keeping x and y in the right order, and using coordinates instead of guessing from the picture. Common trouble spots are reversing ordered pairs, connecting points out of order, miscounting grid spaces, and trying to use the distance formula for sides that are simply horizontal or vertical.
Ways to teach it
- Hands-on activity: Give students coordinate cards, have them plot vertices on grid paper, connect in order, then calculate perimeter and area.
- Prompt: Explain how you can find the length from (2, 5) to (2, 9) without counting each grid square.
- Quick assessment: Display four points for a rectangle and ask students to plot it, label side lengths, and find its area.
- Real-world connection: Use a simple park map on a coordinate grid and have students find fence length around a rectangular dog run.
