What this standard means

Students need to see fractions as numbers that can have different names and still mean the same amount. They should use models, number lines, and reasoning to show why fractions like 1/2 and 2/4 are equal, then compare fractions by thinking about size, not just the numbers written.

Mastery looks like explaining comparisons with clear evidence, such as common denominators, common numerators, benchmarks, or visual models. Students often get stuck comparing only denominators or only numerators, thinking 1/8 is larger than 1/6 because 8 is bigger.
