What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find and create fractions that name the same amount. They compare two fractions with different numerators or denominators and support each answer with a model or clear reasoning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students generate equivalent fractions by multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number. They compare fractions using models, benchmarks, or common numerators or denominators, then explain their reasoning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a larger denominator means a larger fraction. They may compare only numerators or denominators, or create equivalent fractions by changing just one number.
How to Assess It
- Give students 3/4, 6/8, and 5/6. Ask them to identify the equivalent pair, compare the remaining values, and justify both answers with a model.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs fraction strips to build equivalent fractions and place 2/3, 3/4, and 5/6 in order.
Ask students to explain why 3/5 is greater than 3/8 using words, a drawing, and a comparison symbol.
Play fraction match with cards showing fractions, area models, and number lines, then have students defend each match.
Compare two snack recipes with different fractional amounts of the same ingredient and decide which recipe uses more.
