Common Misconceptions

Students may think a larger denominator means a larger fraction. They may compare only numerators or denominators, or create equivalent fractions by changing just one number.

How to Assess It

Give students 3/4, 6/8, and 5/6. Ask them to identify the equivalent pair, compare the remaining values, and justify both answers with a model.
