CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.3

Math3rd GradeDevelop understanding of fractions as numbers.

The standard

Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size.

What this standard means

Students need to see fractions as numbers that can be equal or unequal, even when they look different. They should use models, number lines, and reasoning to show why 1/2 equals 2/4, why 3/6 equals 1/2, and why 3/4 is greater than 2/4 or 1/3.

Mastery looks like explaining comparisons with words, drawings, or number lines, not just guessing from the numbers. Common trouble spots are thinking bigger denominators always mean bigger fractions, comparing only numerators, and not checking that fractions refer to the same-sized whole.

Ways to teach it

  • Give pairs fraction strips and have them build all the fractions equal to 1/2, then record matching equations.
  • Ask students to write: Is 2/3 greater than 2/4, and how do you know without dividing?
  • Show four fraction pairs on mini whiteboards and have students circle the greater fraction and draw one model to justify it.
  • Use a pizza menu with same-size pizzas and ask which order gives more, 1/2 cheese or 2/4 pepperoni.
