The standard
Find the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths by tiling it, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
What this standard means
Students need to build rectangles with unit squares, count the squares, and connect that count to multiplication. They should see rows and columns, then explain why a 4 by 6 rectangle has 4 rows of 6 or 6 rows of 4.
Mastery looks like drawing or tiling a rectangle, labeling side lengths, writing a matching multiplication equation, and giving the area in square units. Students often count side lengths instead of inside squares, leave gaps or overlaps in tiles, or mix up perimeter and area.
Ways to teach it
- Hands-on activity: Give students inch tiles and cards like 3 by 5, then have them build, sketch, and write the area equation.
- Discussion prompt: Ask, “How does your tiled rectangle prove that 4 times 7 gives the area?”
- Quick assessment: Show a 5 by 6 rectangle grid and ask students to write the multiplication equation and area in square units.
- Real-world connection: Measure a book cover with square sticky notes, then compare counting all notes to multiplying rows by columns.
