The standard
Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with whole-number side lengths by packing it with unit cubes, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths, equivalently by multiplying the height by the area of the base. Represent threefold whole-number products as volumes, e.g., to represent the associative property of multiplication.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics
What this standard means
Students need to connect volume to counting unit cubes, not just memorize a formula. They should build or picture a rectangular prism, count cubes in layers, and see why length times width times height gives the same total. They also need to read a product like 3 × 4 × 5 as a prism with those edge lengths.
Mastery looks like explaining volume in cubic units using layers, base area, and edge lengths. Common sticking points are counting only visible cubes, mixing up area and volume, forgetting cubic units, or using the formula without knowing what each factor means.
Ways to teach it
- Have students build 2 × 3 × 4 prisms with unit cubes, then record cubes per layer, number of layers, and total volume.
- Ask students to explain in writing why 5 × 6 × 2 and 2 × 5 × 6 can describe the same prism volume.
- Show three prism diagrams and have students write the volume equation and cubic units on a sticky note.
- Connect to shipping boxes by measuring a small box in whole inches and finding how many 1-inch cubes would fill it.
