Common Core State Standards for Mathematics · Number and Operations in Base Ten

What this standard means

Students need to read numbers up to 1000, write them in digits, write them in words, and show them in expanded form. They should connect 472, four hundred seventy-two, and 400 + 70 + 2 as the same number.

Mastery looks like moving between all three forms without losing the value of each digit. Students often mix up teen and ty words, skip zeros in numbers like 506, or write expanded form as 5 + 6 instead of 500 + 6.

Ways to teach it

  • Build numbers with base-ten blocks, then have students record each one in digits, words, and expanded form on a three-column mat.
  • Ask students to explain how 304 and 340 are different using place value words, not just digit names.
  • Show 608, six hundred eighty, and 600 + 8, then ask students to circle the one that does not match.
  • Use classroom addresses, page numbers, or sports scores under 1000 and have students write each in digits, words, and expanded form.
