What this standard means

Students need to read, write, and compare whole numbers with many digits. They should move between standard form, word form, and expanded form without losing place values. They also need to explain why one number is greater or less by looking at digits from left to right.

Mastery looks like a student writing 408,056 as words and expanded form, then correctly comparing it to 480,056 using place value language. Common trouble spots are skipping zeroes, saying numbers out of order, treating the longest number as largest, or comparing from the ones place first.

Ways to teach it

  • Give students digit cards and place value mats, then have them build, read, and rewrite five teacher-called numbers in three forms.
  • Ask students to explain, in writing, how they know 507,230 is greater than 570,203 or less than it.
  • Show two numbers on the board and have students write >, <, or = on a sticky note with one place value reason.
  • Use city populations or sports attendance numbers and ask students to rank them from least to greatest with comparison symbols.
