What This Standard Means

Students need to take part in serious class talk, not just answer when called on. They should come prepared, listen closely, refer to the text or topic, ask useful questions, add to someone else’s idea, and explain their own thinking clearly.

Mastery sounds like a student saying, “I agree with Maya because paragraph 4 supports that,” or “Can you explain what you mean by bias?” Students often get stuck repeating opinions, drifting off topic, interrupting, or speaking without evidence. Quiet students may need roles and sentence starters. Talkative students may need limits and listening goals.

Ways to Teach It

  • Hands-on activity: Give each group discussion cards labeled evidence, question, connect, and clarify, then require every card to be used once.
  • Writing prompt: After a discussion, students write which classmate changed or challenged their thinking and explain exactly how.
  • Quick assessment: Use a checklist during a five-minute fishbowl to mark evidence use, turn-taking, questions, and building on ideas.
  • Real-world connection: Have students hold a school council meeting about phone rules, using agenda items, speaker order, and evidence from a short article.
