What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students prepare for and take part in partner, group, and class discussions. They use evidence, follow discussion rules, ask and answer questions, build on ideas, and state their own views clearly.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students arrive prepared with notes and evidence. They speak clearly, follow agreed rules, ask useful questions, connect their comments to others, and adjust their thinking when new evidence appears.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat discussion as taking turns sharing separate opinions rather than connecting ideas. They may interrupt, repeat points, rely on unsupported claims, or mistake disagreement for disrespect.

How to Assess It

Use a four-person discussion on a shared text. Track whether each student cites evidence, responds to another speaker, and asks one relevant follow-up question.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give each group discussion chips. Students spend one chip when citing evidence, asking a follow-up question, or connecting to a classmate’s point.

  2. Discuss whether schools should limit homework, using two details from a short article and responding directly to one classmate’s claim.

  3. Play Build, Challenge, Clarify. Students draw a card and must extend, question, or restate the previous speaker’s idea before adding their own.

  4. Hold a mock school board meeting where students propose a phone policy, hear objections, revise ideas, and summarize the group’s final position.
