CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.8.1b
The Standard
Follow rules for collegial discussions and decision-making, track progress toward specific goals and deadlines, and define individual roles as needed.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to participate in group talk without letting it turn into a free-for-all. They should use agreed norms, stay on topic, listen, take turns, and help the group make decisions. They also need to know the goal, the deadline, and who is doing what.
Mastery looks like a group that can run itself for a short task. Students name roles, check progress, adjust the plan, and hold each other accountable respectfully. Common trouble spots are vague jobs, one student taking over, quiet students disappearing, and groups talking a lot without making a decision.
Ways to Teach It
- Give groups a 12-minute planning task with role cards: facilitator, recorder, timekeeper, evidence checker, then have them submit one decision sheet.
- Ask students to write: What rule helps group work most, and what happens when the group ignores it?
- During group work, use a checklist for norms, roles, goal progress, deadline check, and decision made, then score one group live.
- Connect it to a club planning a fundraiser, where students assign jobs, set a deadline, and choose one final plan.
