CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.7.1b
The Standard
Follow rules for collegial discussions, track progress toward specific goals and deadlines, and define individual roles as needed.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to participate in group discussions with agreed norms, clear goals, deadlines, and assigned jobs when needed. They should know how to listen, take turns, stay on topic, and help the group move toward a concrete outcome.
Mastery looks like a group that can run without constant teacher rescue. Students remind each other of norms, use time well, and complete their roles. Common trouble spots are vague goals, one student taking over, quiet students hiding, and groups talking without producing anything.
Ways to Teach It
- Give each literature circle a role card, timer, discussion norms sheet, and one question they must answer together in ten minutes.
- Ask students to write: Which group norm helped your team most today, and what should your group improve next time?
- During a discussion, use a clipboard checklist for turn-taking, role completion, staying on topic, and progress toward the task.
- Connect the skill to planning a school event, where students assign jobs, set deadlines, and report progress at a team meeting.
