What This Standard Means

Students need to come to discussions prepared, listen closely, respond to classmates, and explain their own thinking clearly. They should use evidence from a text or topic, ask useful questions, and keep the conversation moving without taking over or fading out.

Mastery looks like a student saying, “I agree with Maya because…” or “Can you show where the text says that?” without being prompted. Students often get stuck giving vague opinions, repeating someone else, interrupting, or waiting for the teacher to rescue the talk.

Ways to Teach It

  • Run a four-person role card discussion with facilitator, evidence finder, question asker, and summarizer after reading a short article.
  • Use the prompt, “Which character made the strongest choice, and what evidence supports your view?” for a structured group talk.
  • Have students submit one sticky note with a classmate’s idea they built on and the sentence they used to respond.
  • Connect to a town council meeting by having groups discuss a school issue, then share one proposal with evidence.
