What This Standard Means

Students need to listen closely, take turns, stay on topic, and add ideas that connect to what someone else said. They should be able to talk with a partner, a small group, or the whole class about a book, article, problem, or class topic.

Mastery looks like a student saying, “I agree because,” “I want to add,” or “Can you explain that?” without being prompted every time. Students often get stuck repeating their own idea, talking over others, or giving short answers that do not move the conversation forward.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give each group a picture book page, three sticky notes, and roles for speaker, listener, and questioner before a five-minute talk.
  • Use the prompt, “What did your partner say that changed or added to your thinking?” after a read-aloud discussion.
  • During partner talk, use a checklist for eye contact, turn-taking, staying on topic, and building on one idea.
  • Connect to planning a class celebration by having students discuss options, respond to classmates, and agree on one choice.
