What This Standard Means

Students need to join conversations about books, topics, and classroom learning with partners, small groups, and the whole class. They should listen, take turns, stay on topic, ask and answer questions, and build on what others say instead of giving one-word replies.

Mastery looks like a student speaking clearly, using details from the text or lesson, and responding to classmates by name or idea. Students often get stuck waiting for their turn, repeating what was already said, or talking only to the teacher instead of the group.

Ways to Teach It

  • Hands-on activity: Give each group a picture book, four talk chips, and a question card, then have students spend one chip each time they speak.
  • Prompt: Write or discuss, “I agree with ___ because…” or “I want to add to ___’s idea by…” after a shared read-aloud.
  • Quick assessment: During partner talk, use a checklist for taking turns, staying on topic, asking a question, and adding a detail.
  • Real-world connection: Practice a class meeting about choosing a recess game, with students listening, responding, and giving reasons for their choice.
