Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Speaking and Listening Standards

What This Standard Means

Students need to join a group conversation, listen to others, and speak clearly about a first grade topic or text. They should take turns, stay on topic, respond to what someone said, and use agreed rules like raising a hand or looking at the speaker.

Mastery looks like a child adding a relevant idea, asking a simple question, and connecting their comment to the book or topic. Students often get stuck waiting their turn, repeating a classmate, talking only to the teacher, or drifting into unrelated stories.

Ways to Teach It

  • Hands-on activity: Give each child three linking cubes, and have them place one in the cup each time they add to a partner talk.
  • Discussion prompt: After a read-aloud, ask, “What did your partner say that made you think more about the story?”
  • Quick assessment: Use a checklist during rug talk for turn-taking, staying on topic, and responding to another student’s idea.
  • Real-world connection: Practice a class meeting about choosing a recess game, with students listening, giving reasons, and responding politely.
