What This Standard Means

Students need to talk with classmates and adults about books, class topics, and shared experiences. They should listen, take turns, stay on topic, and add something that makes sense. They also need practice talking in pairs, small groups, and whole group settings.

Mastery looks like a child facing the speaker, waiting for a turn, using a clear voice, and responding to what someone else said. Many kindergarteners struggle with interrupting, repeating an idea without adding to it, or drifting into a personal story that does not match the topic.

Ways to Teach It

  • Hands-on activity: Give pairs a picture card and have them take turns saying one thing they notice and one question they have.
  • Prompt: After a read-aloud, ask, “What did your partner say about the character, and what would you add?”
  • Quick assessment: During carpet talk, use a checklist for eye contact, turn-taking, staying on topic, and responding to a peer.
  • Real-world connection: Practice a lunch choice conversation where students ask a partner what they picked and reply with a related comment.
