What This Standard Means

Students need to join conversations in pairs, small groups, and whole class settings. They should come prepared, listen to classmates, take turns, ask useful questions, add details, and explain their own thinking clearly about a grade 4 text or topic.

Mastery looks like a student referring to the text, responding to a classmate by name or idea, and adding something new instead of repeating. Students often get stuck waiting passively, changing the subject, giving one word answers, or disagreeing without explaining why.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give each group a short article, role cards, and sticky notes, then have students discuss using one note as evidence for each comment.
  • Use the prompt, Which classmate changed or added to your thinking today, and what exactly did they say?
  • During a partner talk, tally whether each student asks a question, uses evidence, and responds to the partner’s idea.
  • Connect to a team meeting by having students plan a class event and practice agreeing, adding on, and asking clarifying questions.
