What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students trace how human actions affect habitats, populations, and competition between species. They use evidence to explain how living and nonliving conditions can reshape an ecosystem.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can analyze an ecosystem scenario and identify the initial change, direct effects, and later effects. They support predictions with data about resources, populations, or environmental conditions.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume every environmental change harms all species equally or that ecosystems quickly return to their original state. They may also confuse nonliving factors, such as rainfall, with living factors, such as predators.

How to Assess It

Give students a pond scenario where fertilizer runoff increases algae. Ask them to predict two later ecosystem changes and explain each link in the chain.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a food web with organism cards, then remove one habitat resource and track population effects using counters.

  2. Ask students to write which would affect a marsh more, drought or a new predator, and defend their choice with evidence.

  3. Play an ecosystem chain reaction game where teams draw change cards and predict effects before revealing possible outcomes.

  4. Use a local construction, farming, or stormwater example to map effects on habitat, resources, competition, and species populations.
