What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect a habitat change to shifts in food, water, shelter, space, or breeding sites. They predict which populations will grow, shrink, move, or disappear and support the prediction with evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a map, graph, or scenario, students identify affected species and explain the cause of each population shift. They recognize that one disturbance can help some populations while harming others.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every habitat change reduces all populations. They may confuse an individual animal moving with an entire population changing. They may also overlook delayed effects caused by food web relationships.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A wetland is drained for construction. Name two populations likely to change, predict each change, and explain which lost resource causes it.

Ways to Teach It
Place pill bugs in a damp and dry choice chamber, record their locations, then connect the results to habitat loss.
Ask students to write which species might benefit when a forest becomes grassland and defend their choice with evidence.
Play a habitat card game where teams adjust animal counters after drawing drought, fire, development, or restoration cards.
Use local aerial photos from two different years to identify land changes and predict effects on three nearby species.
