What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use observations and data to track how organisms, populations, and ecosystems change over different time scales. They explain how environmental shifts can raise or lower population sizes and disrupt food webs.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can read population graphs, identify the environmental change, and predict which populations will increase or decrease. They support predictions with evidence and explain effects of nutrient pollution, climate shifts, or catastrophic events.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think ecosystems stay balanced unless a disaster occurs, or that every environmental change reduces all populations. They may also confuse an organism’s short-term response with a population change across generations.

How to Assess It

Give students a graph showing an algal bloom followed by falling dissolved oxygen and fish numbers. Ask them to explain the sequence and predict what happens next.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up clear jars with pond water and different fertilizer amounts, then track algae cover and dissolved oxygen for five days.

  2. Write a claim explaining how a two-week drought could change plant, insect, and frog populations in a pond.

  3. Sort scenario cards into daily, seasonal, long-term, or catastrophic change, then predict which populations rise or fall.

  4. Graph a teacher-provided Chesapeake Bay nitrogen and dissolved oxygen data table, then explain the relationship.
